Carlsten Fortress

Carlsten Fortress stands tall over Marstrand and is one of Sweden's most impressive and well-preserved fortresses. Construction began in 1658, shortly after Bohuslän became Swedish, to protect the important harbour town and strengthen Sweden's control over the west coast. The fortress was expanded over more than 200 years and became one of the country's largest defence facilities.

Despite its mighty defences, Carlsten Fortress was only conquered once – in 1677, during the Scanian War. Throughout the centuries, it has also served as a prison, with the notorious criminal Lasse-Maja being one of the most famous inmates.

Today, Carlsten Fortress is one of Bohuslän's most popular tourist destinations. Visitors can explore the historic walls, casemates, and viewpoints while learning more about the fortress's dramatic history. From the top, a magnificent view unfolds over Marstrand, the archipelago, and the open sea.

Together with the picturesque island of Marstrand, Carlsten Fortress is an obvious symbol of the Bohuslän coast and a popular destination for both history enthusiasts and visitors who want to experience one of Sweden's most spectacular coastal environments.

North River

Nordre älv is Sweden's largest river branch and separates Hisingen from the mainland before it flows into the Kattegat north of Gothenburg. Together with Göta älv, it forms a unique water landscape that has been of great importance to the city's development, trade, and shipping over the centuries.

The river is surrounded by one of western Sweden's most valuable natural and wetland areas. The rich birdlife, shallow bays and lush coastal meadows have made the area a nature reserve and a popular destination for birdwatchers, paddlers and nature lovers.

Unlike the lively Göta älv, the Nordre älv has a calmer pace. Here, the water meanders through an open landscape before reaching the sea, and along its banks, you'll find several walking trails, viewpoints, and small boat harbours.

From Gothenburg View, one can follow Nordre älvs väg northwards towards the Kattegat and see how the river connects Gothenburg with the surrounding nature and archipelago.

Marstrand

Marstrand is one of Bohuslän's best-known coastal towns and has for centuries been an important centre for shipping, trade, and sailing. The picturesque island, with its narrow alleyways, colourful wooden houses and lively harbour, attracts visitors all year round and is one of the west coast's most appreciated destinations.

The town was founded as early as the 13th century and quickly developed into an important trading post. During the 18th century, Marstrand became a free port, which contributed to flourishing trade and a vibrant international town life. High above the town sits Carlsten Fortress, which still dominates the silhouette and tells of Marstrand's strategic importance throughout history.

Today Marstrand is particularly famous for its sailing life and its many summer events. Every year, sailors and visitors from all over the world gather to experience sailing races, restaurants, cafes and the unique atmosphere of the harbour.

With its combination of history, coastal nature and maritime life, Marstrand is one of Sweden's most popular destinations and an obvious part of Bohuslän's identity.
